The good against the bad of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is a short story written by Robert Louis Stevenson, a Scottish author. Written and published in 1886, this novella reflects on individual and social behavior during the Victorian era. During the Victorian era people were supposed to behave like a normal person. Some behaviors were highly restricted, such as showing evil. Instead, they were expected to respect everyone. People who acted against the norm during this period were usually sent to mental asylums because such behavior was unacceptable. People in this society did just that, they acted as if they were perfectly normal. That doesn't mean their bad side didn't exist. Instead, they hid their evil side from the public, letting all their anger out at home, in private. Stevenson's work is a great example for this period. Through one of his main characters, Doctor Jekyll, Stevenson portrays the two distinct behaviors that many people reveal in public life and private life. In society, people with high status were generally well known and were highly respected. Dr. Jekyll was the perfect man in this story before everything changed. Dr. Jekyll is a well-known doctor and scientist of his time. He has many doubts about people and their personalities and believes that a person can separate the good and bad halves of his body, "...man is not truly one, but truly two" (106). Even though Dr. Jekyll is getting everything he can, he is still not satisfied. Out in public, Jekyll feels stressed, feeling like something is missing in his life. Acting normally in the community is not something he really wants to do: he wants to express himself and be different. With this, Jekyll finds a way... middle of paper... to sell illegal drugs. As the rate of crime and temptation increases, the evil side of people will emerge, pushing them to do things they never thought they would do. To protect his good reputation, Doctor Jekyll lived out his dark and evil desires through an alternate identity. In his creation of Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll tries to privately separate the sides of his nature to satisfy his darker side. without affecting the public reputation of his better half. Robert Stevenson portrays the two contradictory sides that all human beings have within themselves, and when each of them truly comes out. It does this by portraying the actions of its main character, Doctor Jekyll. • Stevenson creates the dual personality of Dr. Jekyll to reveal the manifest differences between an individual's public and private personalities, thus revealing the sinister side of society.
