Recent cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Aid Program (SNAP), also known as the US Food Stamp Program, have become extremely controversial. It remains to be seen whether Congress was wrong to reduce funding for the program. There are two principles that can be used to represent each side of this debate. The difference principle will be used to represent those who believe that program cuts have been unjustified, and the harm principle will be used to represent those who believe that program cuts have been justified. Those who oppose cuts to the Food Stamp program may argue that, under the difference principle, Congress was wrong to reduce funding. The difference principle, created by John Rawls, states that an inequality in a society, for example in power or wealth, is justified only if it benefits the most disadvantaged. It is important to note that this principle was created under what Rawls called a “veil of ignorance”; this is used to ensure that people are not tempted to choose rules that benefit themselves, even if they are worse for others.
