At the beginning of the 20th century, many people felt as if their societies were headed for a horrible decline. With the Great Depression underway, many people found great comfort in those individuals who rose to the occasion to help the people. Those like Hitler, who promised jobs and a better life, also provided a scapegoat, just as Big Brother 1984, written by George Orwell, did. However, there were also individuals who thought that the world would end quickly if people did not learn to appreciate the things they were given, as William Yeats talks about in "The Second Coming". In both songs the author has a very clear fear of the future and what is to come. “The bloody bond is loosened, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned.” As many see our society today, Yeats was afraid of what the future had in store and felt it was necessary to warn society of their abominable behavior. All the good in society has been taken and overwhelmed by the horrible actions. No more ceremonies or acts of kindness take place, which Yeats believes are a direct effect of the loss of youth and innocence. "That twenty centuries of stony sleep were oppressed to nightmare by a rocking cradle." This quote from "The Second Coming" informs society that if they do not begin to correct their transgressions with each other as a whole they will awaken the antichrist. The antichrist will come to reclaim his Jesus and correct the difficult situation they have gotten themselves into. The community in 1984 was also on track to become very stagnant and progress at a very slow pace economically. With all the power in the hands of one individual, Big Brother, there have been constant wars, which have kept the economy in its current position. In the novel there is a clear amount of those who have lost their individual selves. People are no longer allowed to hold personal beliefs and must believe what the party tells them. “And if the party says it's not four but five, then how many?” "Four." (Orwell 273). Forcing party members to say that two plus two equals five is an example of mind control.
