Solitary confinement gives prisoners the opportunity to serve their sentences and then reforms them upon release (Connectusfund, 2015). Prisoners have the opportunity to correct their character. They have all that time to reflect on themselves and look at what they had done. Some may have a lot of time to think seriously about what they have done. Solitary confinement was first used widely and systematically on both sides of the Atlantic in the "separate" and "silent" penitentiaries of the 19th century, with the aim of reforming inmates. It was believed that, when left alone with their conscience and the Bible, prisoners would engage in internal reflection, see the errors of their ways, and be transformed into law-abiding citizens (Connectusfund, 2015, p.2 ). Additionally, the time that prisoners use and spend alone helps ensure that they are still not as harmful as they were when they entered confinement.
