Miller includes quotes and opinions from both those in favor and those who are not in favor and does not impose his own opinions on the reader. This article was worth my time because it broadened my view of dress codes and the reasons they are established. This hasn't changed my view, but I now see how they are sometimes necessary until deeper and more comprehensive changes can be made, especially when students' lives are at stake. It is for this reason that Detroit schools have taken action against crimes within the student population by adopting a dress code. Mumford High School was the first school in Detroit to enforce a dress code in 1986. The school also requires all book bags to be see-through to ensure students are not concealing firearms or other weapons. Subsequently, Dunbar High School also imposed a dress code in 1988. Today, violators of these regulations are punished with suspension and failing grades on the permanent records. After these changes were made, the number of robberies in Dunbar had decreased significantly. Along with Mumford and Dunbar high schools, Tilton Elementary School in Detroit has adopted uniform optional after an increase in student robberies.
