Topic > You reap what you sow in Silas Marner by George Eliot

The definition of destiny is the unfolding of events beyond a person's control. It is considered as something determined by a supernatural power, but I believe the opposite. In fact, I believe exactly the opposite. I believe that people actually have the power to manipulate their own destiny; Based on the good or bad choices they have made in the past. George Eliot's novel Silas Marner helps explain this. Through the actions of the three main characters Dunstan Cass, Godfrey Cass and Silas Marner. These characters were chosen because they all made good or bad choices throughout the novel with a clear punishment or reward; Or in other words, these characters show how they control their destiny based on previous actions or choices. For starters, Dunstan Cass made poor choices throughout the novel. For example, Dunstan decided to use the knowledge he had about Godfrey as blackmail. As Dunstan says: "I could tell the squire that his handsome son was married to that nice young woman, Molly Farren, and that he was very unhappy because he could not live with his drunken wife, and I should slip into your place as comfortable as it could be”' (24). Dunstan chose to be a good and loving brother by using that knowledge to help his brother in the situation he is in. Because he would have better understanding because of the knowledge he already has knowledge to control his brother. Dunstan also steals Silas' money. Once again, Dunstan had a choice. He could have told Godfrey about his idea to borrow money from Silas. Which, while it may not have worked, was the right thing to do. The novel tells us why he made that choice. says the narrator, "a mischievous and mocking type, who seemed to appreciate his drink even more with...... trustworthy until death" (181). Silas got what he truly deserves for his kindness through the choices he made. For example, if he had never adopted Eppie, he would not be in this state of happiness and love. That novel clearly shows that his decision affected his future. All in all, Silas's good choices have paved the way from a lonely and dark past to a bright and healthy future. In conclusion, the actions of these three characters in the novel Silas Marner by George Eliot, demonstrate that people get what they deserve. Through good or bad choices, George Eliot shows that they cause their own destiny. We now know that this may have been the main point George Eliot was trying to make in this novel. Was this his plan all along to prove that all men reap what they sow? Leave it for later. What we know for sure is that our destiny is in our hands.
