Remember how I told you that people around me are racist? My aunt and uncle, my best friend and, at one point, my parents. Yes, that's true. Your brother was once, and sometimes still is, a bit of a racist. So why am I writing this letter to you? Well, I just read this interesting article about racism, specifically about biker weeks which were basically segregated. And we know a lot about bikers, since dad was one. So in South Carolina, one biker week called Harley Week is exclusively white while the other called Black Bike is exclusively black. As the author and other sociologists state, the differences in the treatment of these two groups of motorcyclists were striking and not difficult to notice. One of the key points highlighted by the author was the different actions of the city, the police, tourists and tourists. how they reacted to the two different weeks. During the first week, White Biker Week, bikers were free to stroll all over the street and receive praise from everyone they saw. During Black Bike Week, however, only one lane of the street was open, all shop windows were closed and there was an extra police presence. Soon after, the NAACP sued the city and the restaurants for violating civil rights laws. Sociologists realized that the city and the restaurants would say exactly the same thing: The situation was due to several factors that did not include race. The reasons for the unfair treatment would be the age difference and criminal activity. Another reason may have been the fact that Black Biker Week was set on Memorial Day. Eventually, all reasons were debunked using facts and statistics, and there was really no reason other than racism why the two they were treated differently... middle of the paper... and to tell you about racism, because racism is a very sensitive topic, especially when you insist that white people are color blind. My final thoughts should be: What should we do next? What comes next? Will people read this article and finally see the error in their ways? In the event that this doesn't happen, which it seems it won't until pigs fly, we should suggest solutions to combat the problem. There have already been numerous protests, I even saw one at the University of Akron over the recent racist threats at the University of Missouri. Maybe we can start programs across the country for people who are discriminated against, for example in employment, where they can find a career in a safe place. There are a lot of things white allies can do to make this world better for people of color, but first we need to get educated and less ignorant.
