Topic > Oscar Romero - 359

Oscar Romero was initially a quiet, ordinary priest in the democratic country of El Salvador. But things change once he is appointed archbishop. Romero quickly uncovers the way the country is run by the military. The poor people of Salvador have disappeared and are being executed by the military. Romero tries to stop these events through the power of the Church. Raul Julia plays Oscar Romero, the soft-spoken priest turned archbishop. His character goes through a metamorphosis from start to finish that ultimately leads to his death. The only moment in time that really changes the way he acts is the death of Father Great. Brother Grande was a preacher of the poor and of anyone who wanted to listen to the Word of the Lord. With the killing and torturing of people Romero gets very angry and says STOP! In a scene where he is in prison and listens to the priest being tortured, he doesn't understand why one human being would do this to another. We are all human and why should we take their lives if they didn't do anything. The Church in this film is made up of people who are very strong in their faith and stand up for what they believe. For example, when people from a city walk directly into a church that has been taken over by the military. This demonstrates their willingness to die for God. Other acts show the people of El Salvador courage and deep faith. I think this is a very beautiful film. The strong imagination and sadness that these events actually happen in El Salvador and other similar countries. Romero's words were inspiring, the way he presented himself after every bad deed by the army he had just done
