Topic > Jesus: The Tragic Hero - 827

Since Christianity is the number one universalizing religion, many are familiar with the story of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. While they may not actually belong to the religion, many also celebrate the holidays of Christmas and Easter, both extremely important days in the Christian religion. These two have been used for marketing seasonal products particularly in the United States. Christmas is the time for extravagant spending on gifts for children and loved ones, while Easter is the time for hunting for chocolate eggs, marshmallows and the Easter Bunny. However, these things are very different from how things happen in the Bible. Christmas is the time to celebrate the son of God becoming man, and Easter is the celebration of his resurrection from the dead, encountered three days earlier. The resurrection isn't exactly a standard thing, and Jesus does a lot of other things that don't happen to normal people. Jesus himself has a prophecy foretold about him, an unusual birth, an attempt on his life, he is exiled, he goes on a quest, his people turn against him, he dies on a hill and there is a mystery surrounding his death. Above all, it is unique. These elements provide evidence that Jesus was a tragic hero. Jesus has several prophecies foretold about him, one of which would be this: “Behold, the virgin will conceive and bear a son, and will call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)” He was born of a virgin, Saint Mary, and conceived through the Holy Spirit. «Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, in Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be registered together with Mary, his fiancée, who was with child." (Luke 2 :1) This quote from Luke 2:1 s...... middle of paper...... he was young, tries to share the word of God, his people turn against him, he dies on a hill and a mystery surrounds his death. Not only that, but his character is unique in several aspects of his life. All these elements are necessary in the creation of a tragic hero, and Jesus possesses them. there are some that by their nature do not apply. He does not kill a monster, because he is not a war hero and he was a peaceful man. He did not receive great rewards, while in reality he received the opposite against him and crucified him...not exactly the greatest reward for a hero. Finally, he did not marry a princess, since his goal of spiritually saving humanity would not have required marriage to a princess. Overall, Jesus is an exceptional example of a tragic hero, as he fulfills almost every cliché that a tragic hero should have.
