Global business and ethics1. Any company operating in the United States and abroad has a responsibility to be socially responsible. This responsibility is driven by corporate ethics: core values that guide a company's behavior. This ethic is present in all decisions made by companies. Including what goes into products, how they are advertised and sold, and how they are disposed of. Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, is the largest corporation and private employer in the United States. Wal-Mart is consistently listed among Fortune magazine's most admired American companies. At the same time, it is often the subject of criticism for its employment practices and its effect on the economy and community as a whole. How should consumers evaluate these issues? Is it ethical to shop at Wal-Mart? (http://www.scu.edu/ethics/publications/ethicalperspectives/wal-mart.html) Wal-Mart can be seen as both socially responsible and unethical. Wal-Mart makes headlines almost every day with stories of hiring illegal immigrants, gender discrimination, low wages and closing smaller stores. This, however, is only one side of the story. By conveying to consumers the benefits of its brilliant distribution system, its forward-thinking managers have done nothing less than democratize the American dream. Its low prices are boosting productivity and helping win the fight against inflation. It is America's most admired company. (http://www.scu.edu/ethics/publications/ethicalperspectives/wal-mart.html) According to Forbes magazine, Wal-Mart donated $140 million to non-profit organizations last year alone. Additionally, Wal-Mart received the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership, which recognizes outstanding achievement in employment... middle of paper...rd for striving to eliminate unsafe and unfair working conditions in factories of foreign countries .5. I plan to enter the field of human resource management. My field could be largely influenced by companies becoming more global. I am very interested in working with a company where I manage not only the hiring procedures and benefits, but also the safety procedures. If the company I work for operates in the global market I should know different security procedures for national and international procedures. The procedures could be very numerous due to different international laws. Additionally, depending on my responsibilities, I may be responsible for hiring in these foreign markets. I would have a possible language barrier to deal with in addition to finding the best candidate for the job. I would be very enthusiastic if I had to deal with all these aspects of the foreign market in my work.
