Topic > Online Teen Forum Review - 686

The Book & Reader forums are a place designed to allow users of all ages to discuss books. Within the forums of this website there is a forum described as intended for children's and young adult books. This forum appears to receive a limited amount of traffic. A search using the forum's search function revealed that 33 posts have been published since the beginning of the year. While some of these posts were written by adults, I also encountered several that appeared to be written by teenagers. The forum does not require members to post their age; however, in older posts I noticed several teenagers mentioning their age. Posters can only be identified by how much information they are willing to share, so it is sometimes difficult to determine exactly who is posting. Teen Interaction Much of the interaction on this forum is by individuals, presumably teens, asking for book recommendations. Other users or site staff members give their opinion on which book would best suit the user's request. Occasionally a user offers their opinion in the form of a book review, although it is informal and often still takes the form of a recommendation. Perhaps the best example is a post from November last year regarding The Faults in Our Stars. In the post, the author comments on how much she enjoys John Green's writing and how she feels "... like I've connected with the characters and become very emotionally attached to the characters in the books" (bookwormlife, 2013). The conversation develops between this author and another as they discuss the book. When I found people who were apparently teenagers, I checked their posting records and was surprised to find that they often posted in other forums. Often… middle of paper… and they share their personal opinions and feelings about the books they love and hate with a wider audience than has ever been possible. While it lacks the sophistication of a professional review, teens' ability to build relationships and discuss books conversationally is a powerful form of interaction with literature.
