Filipinos started making films in the year 1919. The first Filipino to make a film goes to Jose Nepomuceno, also known as the "Father of Philippine Films". Since then, Philippine films became a hit. Foreign films have been on the rise in Philippine cinema lately. In the 2000s, it shows the dramatic decline of the Philippine film industry. Hollywood films control mainstream theaters even more and films produced in the Philippines gradually decline, that's why many producers and production companies stop producing films after losing a million pesos. Subsequently, independent films began to emerge in Philippine cinema. Independent films or independent films, as we all know, are films that are not made by traditional film productions and are not made in traditional film studios. As the name suggests, it is a film production independent of the influences, powers and authority of the mainstream ones (Sulat, 2010). Independent films produced in the Philippines are mostly controversial, showing the Philippines different sides of life, making them unacceptable to people who do not watch films based on real life like independent films. This article is based on the study conducted by Alexis Tioseco in 2007. The focus of Tioseco's study is on the current state of independent cinema in the Philippines, briefly compares it with its past, highlights some of the key figures who pushed it to the present and proposes the main area where development is needed for it to progress further.
