Due to strict laws, the New York metropolitan area has the lowest rate of gun violence in the United States of America. New York has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation. No permit is required to purchase a rifle or shotgun in New York State, except in New York City. To purchase a gun you need a license to own a pistol or revolver. Outside of New York City, a person authorized to possess a pistol or revolver may at any time apply to the licensing officer in the county of his residence to amend his license to include one or more such pistols or to remove a pistol held under license. No person engaged in the sale of firearms may transfer the firearm to another unless the transferee is equipped with a firearm locking device and tag. Any manufacturer delivering a firearm to any person in this State shall include it in the container enclosing it; a bullet casing or projectile fired from such gun and additional information about such gun.
