Contrary to what the media and society say, women in Middle Eastern society have a respectable status. “…Bob ate with the men in the mudhif or the sheikhs' guest house and I ate lunch in the harem, or the women's quarters (Fernea, 31).” Western thinking would automatically jump to the conclusion and assume that women are not being respected by sitting in a different room with only women, something “sexist”. Unfortunately, ignorance in this case is not happiness. The reason why women sit in a different room from men during occasions is actually to respect women. We are all human, so our eyes can wander intentionally or unintentionally, but it is very disrespectful if a man stares at someone else's wife, let alone a stranger. Many argue that these types of expeditions are primitive, but this is not the case. Women who are immersed in this society actually prefer these types of assignments for the reason stated above.
