In the United States, most schools still use a ten-month calendar that was developed when students in our country needed school vacations to help with collection ( Palmer). Kim Jones, superintendent of Trimble Local Schools, says, “Year-round school is the idea of moving away from the old agricultural calendar…which was formed around the planting season. Students did not go to school from April until harvest to work in the fields” (qtd. in Hapka). In the agrarian system, most students in the United States attend school for nine to 10 months and take two to three months of summer vacation. However, the United States is no longer an agriculturally based society, and students do not need to take an unnecessary, not to mention destructive, three-month break during the summer months; instead, the United States should adopt an annual calendar in its school systems. The phrase “year-round” scares both students and parents. Some argue that students who attend school year-round will be so burned out that the new schedule would be counterproductive. However, the term “year-round” is misleading. Students did not go to school continuously twelve months a year. Instead, students would attend in blocks separated by short but frequent breaks (Hapka). The National Education Association provides information on the block system: The most popular form of year-round education is the 45-15 plan, in which students attend school for 45 days and then get three weeks (15 days) off. The usual holiday breaks are still integrated into this calendar. Two other ways to organize a school calendar are 60-20 and 90-30 plans. Perhaps, the most important aspect of year-round education is how it is implemented.
