Cloud computing is a relatively new technology that allows you to store, distribute, and manipulate data more easily than ever before. As described by Gurjar and Rathore (2013), the “Cloud is a large pool of easily used and accessible virtualized resources. These resources can be dynamically reconfigured to accommodate varying load, also enabling optimal resource utilization” (p. 1). By moving data, documents and media to the cloud, the potential for business efficiency and productivity increases, and anyone with the Internet can benefit. As with anything, it's important to understand the risks and benefits to evaluate whether or not moving to the cloud is the best move for your business. Some companies, like Lavu, an iPad-based point-of-sale system, operate exclusively on the Cloud. Without cloud computing capability, some organizations would not exist. There are three different types of cloud storage available: public clouds, private clouds, and hybrid cloud service. The differences between the types of cloud storage available can be deduced from the names. Public cloud storage is designed for large, multi-user facilities, like Instagram. Public Cloud servers tend to be managed and maintained by another large organization with servers around the world, such as RackSpace or Amazon. Private cloud storage is built with a specific user's infrastructure, such as the government. In most cases, private cloud storage users operate and maintain their own servers for security and uninterrupted maintenance of the service. Hybrid cloud storage is a case-based combination of public and private cloud storage based on the needs of the organization (Ju, Wu, Fu, Lin, & Zhang, 2011). Compared to the traditional… middle of the paper… risks such as security and compliance are major deterrents from fully adopting cloud-based technologies, but I believe we will see these advancements in the coming hours to enable hesitant organizations and calm individuals when they move to the cloud.
