1. For this article I have chosen to deal with special veterans' courts. This court was created in 2008 in Buffalo, New York. It was created by Judge Robert Russell in an effort to help veterans who have broken the law due to the negative psychological and emotional effects military service can have on a service member. Some veterans, after experiencing various combat situations, being cut off from family and friends, and other hardships related to military service, are unable to reintegrate adequately into civilian life, if at all. They may turn to drug use or alcoholism to cope and/or act in other ways as well. In the various articles of this type of courts that I have read, the courts usually require that the veteran's crime must be nonviolent, although in an article other crimes, such as domestic violence, can be examined if a commission decides so. There are also other veterans who work as volunteers with these offenders, as well as opportunities for treatment, help finding work and counseling. Just like other courts, there are guidelines they must follow, such as abstaining from drug use, not committing other crimes, attending counseling meetings, etc., otherwise they run the risk of going through a criminal court for their original crime . , as well as the possibility of new charges if they had committed multiple crimes.2. The goal of this type of court is to help veterans avoid going through an impersonal criminal justice system by reducing recidivism and to try to give them the opportunity to receive help reintegrating into civilian life.
