It is normal for some people to turn away when they see a challenge or difficult task. Great leaders embrace the challenge and see it as a learning tool not only for themselves but for their employees. During the recession, banks were slowing down. While people still opened checking and savings accounts every day, investing and lending were in decline. Management had to think about how to increase their numbers while still meeting customer needs. This experience allowed team members to come together to think about ways to improve the business. Employees were asked to “look around” and see what other competitors' rates were. Even though all rates were down, this allowed some to stay at the top of the game with competitive rates. There will always be some sort of fear towards change because the outcome is unknown (Shore & Kupferberg, 2014).
