Bill C-279 is an act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code. It is sponsored by the NDP's Randell Garrison. This bill is introduced as a private members' bill. This is an interesting fact because when a bill is introduced as a private members' bill it is likely not to become law. Surprisingly, this bill is on second reading in the Senate as of February 4, 2014. What this bill focuses on is including gender identity as a prohibited ground of discrimination. This bill has currently been approved with 150 voters in favor and 132 against. At this time, Bill C-279 will be sent to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. It will be considered here before being sent back to the House of Commons for a third reading. While there has been a lot of attention paid to this bill by its supporters, our Conservative member Don Plett has an opposing view on Bill C-279. He claims that this bill will allow perverts to take advantage of the law, this is a problem for him. Despite the concerns expressed by various groups and individuals against it, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association thinks otherwise. The CCLA says Bill C-279 will serve as an important deterrent against transphobic discrimination and hate crimes before they occur. They go further and say that this bill will ensure that the realities of trans people are adequately captured and protected by human rights and the criminal code.
