The beginning of the Slow Food Movement dates back to 1986 by a man named Carlo Petrini in response to the invasive Mcdonalds fast food chain that was making its way into the historic Italian capital, Rome . Rome is known internationally for its excellent food, culture and traditions. Carlo Petrini fears that the fast food chain threatens local traditions and ostracizes working-class restaurants (Slow Food Story). Therefore Petrini created his own form of reaction, refraining from conventional protest tactics and strategies such as picketing, marches and boycotts. Instead he armed his people with a plate of feathers. Declaring, "we don't want fast food... we want slow food!" This was the beginning of the Slow Food idea/movement that was later born. Carlo could not bear to sit and watch the destruction brought by the global industrialization of food, along with the cultural, culinary and social toll brought by homogenized eating (Slow Food History). Carlo Petrini understood that it was essential to start a “gastronomic eco-movement” in order to preserve the alternative food choices available. This movement aims for environmental sustainability and the study of culture and food, in order to trace the connection between the food you eat and the land that provided it (Slow Food USA). The emergence of McDonald's in Rome would inevitably change the Roman Italian way of life. Integrity of Food Culture; and this is exactly what Carlo Petrini, an Italian journalist, did not want to happen. The first McDonald's was once built in Rome adjacent to the Spanish Steps. Carlo Petrini was shocked by the emergence of this contagious fast food chain in the capital of his home country. So he started the “Slow Food” movement… middle of paper… how to “support farmers markets and CSAs, create school and community gardens, and unite members from different ends of the food system in debate and common cause ”Works cited”Carlo Petrini: the Slow Food gourmet who started a revolution”.
