Alcohol abuse and the State In our country today there is a serious problem that affects families and people everywhere. This problem is alcohol abuse and addiction, and it is not something that will go away. According to many sources, this problem can have multiple implications and can cause serious harm to those who touch it (Venturrelli 222). And one of the main problems with the disease of alcoholism is that it affects not only drinkers, but everyone who cares for them. It is believed that it is impossible to cure all situations of alcohol abuse, but it is possible to help those who have a problem and try to prevent others from becoming dependent. Most people don't realize what they're getting themselves into when they drink, and some who drink never have a problem. But there are also people who have a disease in their genes, and they are the ones who have the most serious problems. Alcohol abuse can skip generations in families and only manifest in one or two family members every couple of generations (Martin 676). This means that Jane's great-grandfather (fictitious name) may have been an alcoholic and no one else in the family will have problems, and therefore Jane will start having problems. It is impossible to predict who this disease will hit, but when it does it will be very harsh and deadly. Many times alcohol abuse starts out simply as fun, throughout high school I drank a lot and enjoyed it. I don't think a week went by where I didn't drink at least four times a week, but I never let it get out of control and I knew my limits and when to stop drinking at night. When I entered college things changed, I still drink but my priorities became clearer and I know when to draw the line. There are a lot of people who never got to experience it in high school and got to college and really screwed it up. Many people do not react well with alcohol in their bodies and this is where their problems begin. A main area of alcohol abuse is in "Greek" organizations, I'm not saying they are bad because there are many non "Greeks" who drink, but these organizations help many to have access to alcohol.
