Caffeine Use Is a Sin Against GodOne of the most widely misunderstood commandments in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Word of Wisdom. The question that seems to concern many church members is whether or not caffeine is part of the Word of Wisdom. In this document we will find that, as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we cannot drink caffeinated beverages and affirm that we live the Word of Wisdom. President Hinckley asked and answered a question during General Conference on October 4, 1997. "Are we moving toward mainstream America as some observers believe? In this I fear we are." The comment came because of the increasing amount of shopping being done on Sunday in Church communities and the increasing amount of disobedience to the Word of Wisdom. His tone was concerned and loving. We have a great responsibility to be an example of virtuous thought and action. We have been extremely blessed with knowledge, which combined with wisdom will give us understanding. Because then, overall, we seem to be regressing and becoming more like the world, as our Prophet said, rather than the savior of all mankind, Jesus Christ. Until now we have been advised by the prophets of antiquity: "seek knowledge, also through study, and faith". We have the obligation to search the Scriptures and to learn what the Lord teaches us and warns us about. We must go forward with faith and not backward. We must come to the Lord and not expect the Lord to come to us. Among the many dangers of this world, the greatest danger we face is an uninformed citizenry himself. Brigham Young said that "Education is the ability to think clearly, to perform well in daily work and to appreciate life." With this definition, and after knowing the effects of caffeine on the human body, I came to the conclusion that drinking caffeine is a sign of lack of self-respect and an unappreciative attitude towards the life that each of us has been blessed with. Furthermore, it demonstrates our inability or unwillingness to learn to think clearly.
