The Dust Bowl was a time when many dust storms affected the agriculture and economy of the United States. Before the dust storms and drought, the land used by farmers was already damaged. Overuse had rendered the soil unusable, and by over-cultivating the land, farmers were no longer able to use the once fertile land, causing a serious impact on the lives of those involved in agriculture. Before the infamous Dust Bowl, the lands to the west were unknown until the exploration of Lewis and Clark. During the Lewis and Clark Expedition, they discovered and explored new lands west of the Mississippi River, finding beautiful, almost unused lands that were only used by a few Native Americans. When lands were found, farmers from the East quickly decided to move to the new land to expand the life they had in the East. The new land west of the Mississippi was known as the Great Plains.
