The novel Women at the Edge of Time and Stranger in a Strange Land have some similarities. Both describe how the process of gender socialization is a prejudice and a catalyst for gender inequality in society. Both stories highlight how men are privileged over women in society. By analyzing the two stories and using external sources I will draw a conclusion on how ideologies of gender and power have influenced equality on our society. “Women at the Edge of Time” is a book written by Marge Piercy that explains the position of women in the era of 1976. 150 years back. This book is open to any kind of interpretation. The narrative shows us the life of a single parent, Chicano. She is a poor woman who struggles to provide for herself and her children; "the plight of poor women in a society that doesn't really care, and the plight of economically disadvantaged women and men caught in the cruel web of mental health." The book takes us through the struggles of an individual trying to extricate himself from the effects of being diagnosed with mental problems in psychiatric institutions. The author's description of Consuelo Ramos, makes her a woman on the edge, as well as someone who no one has. want to be part of. She goes through immense pain until she discovers an adventure that takes her to a less hostile environment. Connie's current life is a combination of degradation, oppression, and senseless behavior as she tries to justify her life. She engages in alcoholic behavior as she tries to bury the grief of losing her husband to hepatitis. This leads Connie to abuse her children.
