Architectural engineers can be team leaders because they know how to balance the aesthetic characteristics and functionality of buildings. Most engineers are trained only in the technical field, but architectural engineers are trained in both the architectural and technical fields. Therefore, they can apply engineering principles, but still appreciate the aesthetic concept of buildings. By applying knowledge from both fields in their designs, they create a balance. According to Jeff Codega, president/CEO of Jeff Codega Planning/Design, “in our man-made environments it is important to maintain a balance between aesthetics and functionality.” The ability to master both the architectural and engineering fields and keep them in balance is essential in the construction industry because buildings must look good to be attractive, but must still function effectively and safely. Architectural engineers understand the creative process and are taught to analyze, so they know the importance of these ways of thinking and when to use them (Barbacci). As a leader, I am able to advise the team and provide them with guidelines that will help maintain the artistic building, but continue to operate efficiently and safely. The leader is expected to provide advice on both the engineering and design concept, which will result in more effective building construction or design. With architectural engineers' understanding and knowledge of both fields, it is easier for architects and engineers to work with them. Therefore, when the architectural engineer is the leader, a better understanding is created within the team and the work will be done in a cost-effective manner. Due to the complexity of building environmental systems, architects cannot design building systems. For construction systems, engineers are needed, but they cannot fully relate to the work of the architect. Architectural engineers have an understanding of both architectural and engineering concepts. Due to their extensive knowledge, they have the authority to lead project teams. As leaders, architectural engineers are able to maintain a balance between the fields of architecture and engineering, in the construction industry. They are able to avoid unnecessary mistakes and make the construction project much more convenient. Architectural engineers can ensure the safety and stability of our environment because they are familiar with the safety codes needed to conduct a safe building.
