I work at a waterfront restaurant with a fine dining atmosphere. Observable aspects of organizational diversity, communication flow, dress and appearance, conflict management, and organizational politics are different than in most organizations. Organizational culture can be defined as the system of shared actions, values, and beliefs that develops within an organization and guides the behavior of its members (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2003). My current organization uses standards, rules and policies to ensure that the organizational culture they wish to achieve is achieved. The organization I work for has such a diverse group of people. The age varies from 16 to 60 years. The sexes are right in the middle between men and women. Education levels range from degrees in economics, English literature, psychology, graphic art, political science, philosophy and teaching. I have never worked in a restaurant that had such a talented group of people. I work with a stewardess who is approaching 50, has a degree in English literature and has traveled the world in different careers. He has worked in the restaurant for fifteen years. I believe he is still in this career because of the flexibility and quick money. I believe the way communication flows in a restaurant is different than the way communication flows in a board meeting. There is so much commotion going on that there needs to be a standard in how messages are conveyed. We start each shift with a two-minute meeting where we discuss new items, things we've run out of, new objectives, contests, and any pertinent information. We check the cleanliness of our workstation, which can also be described as our office, and begin our shift. The duration of the shift is usually carried out during which each individual talks to himself about the numerous tasks that need to be done. If someone on staff has a question, start with the phrase “order please,” wait for a response, and ask your statement or question. This standard is aimed at everyone, including management. Dress and appearance in my organization have no gray areas. Everyone is required to wear uniform. The appearance of the staff is very important when working with the public. We must have a tidy, clean, fresh and well-groomed appearance. There is no tolerance in my organization for anyone not wearing the proper uniform. If the uniform is wrong, you will be sent home. The scope of conflicts in my organization ranges from customer complaints to employee relations.
