When most individuals hear the term privilege, the thought of something earned through hard work and respect comes to mind, but is this the case with all privilege? White privilege is an advantage that white people have in society, which is unearned and usually unrecognized. A fair amount of white people in today's society don't even realize they were born with this privilege. All their lives they are taught to ignore the fact that there is a deep separation between themselves and minority communities. Until one is educated on the simple fact, the topic of white privilege is often seen as “the norm” and set aside, causing a repetition in history and positioning white people as superior. White people make countless profits Society, social media, television, books, etc. they have always considered white women beautiful compared to all other races. The media teaches women at a young age that light skin, blue eyes and European hair are characteristics one must possess to be considered beautiful. This puts minority mothers in an awkward position because they often have to remind their young daughters that they are beautiful and worthy of praise. I remember as a child wondering why I didn't see people who looked like me in commercials or magazines. Why in most cases I can pick up any magazine and see a white person painted as beautiful and successful no matter what, but to see an African American painted as beautiful they have to either do something prevalent in society or sell ethnic hair? An African American person speaks intelligently and these questions are often asked. It is considered “normal” for light-skinned people to speak coherently, but when a person of color does so there is often an element of surprise. This is not good. Precious may have grown up in the same neighborhood as Amy and attended the same schools, but every time Precious speaks everyone is always amazed by "how smart she seems" or "how articulate she is" and when Amy speaks it's Amy
