The political issue of same-sex marriage has recently become one of the biggest debates of the 21st century. Its popularity soared in the United States in 2000, when Vermont became the first state in the country to recognize this type of union between same-sex couples. I believe that same-sex couples should not be denied the right to marry, but there are several credible arguments that contradict my opinion on the matter. These topics include beliefs that; allowing same-sex couples to marry will cause the institution of marriage to collapse, citizens of the United States should not have to pay taxes to support something they believe is wrong, and that legalizing same-sex marriage could lead to the legalization of others non-traditional weddings in the United States. All of these topics raise intriguing points, which make me ask: Is it really worth it? Those who detest same-sex marriage say over and over again that the Bible defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. This is not false, there are several verses throughout the Bible that make same-sex marriage seem extremely sinful. If you were to search for one of these verses, you would surely be able to find several in a very short time. An example is the following: Leviticus 20:13: "If a man has sexual intercourse with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have committed what is abominable. They shall be put to death; their blood shall be shed on their heads." This is just one of many verses that describe these relationships as sinful, so why do people continue to argue against this religious text on the issue? There are many reasons for this: true love, atheism, etc. But just like... middle of paper ......r relationships or stop seeing each other completely, but just don't put a title on their relationship. This is not too much to ask in exchange for keeping the United States culture deeply rooted and unchanged. Changing such a significant aspect of our culture would make many citizens uncomfortable and would undoubtedly lead to anger and chaos within our nation. These are the topics that have come closest to changing my mind, but they are still very far from my beliefs, as a critical thinker I have formed my own beliefs and I can't imagine that I will be influenced enough by one of these ideas to the point that I'll change my mind. Having said that, this is a very sensitive and complex issue, which should not be taken lightly, so in my opinion all the arguments put forward for and against same-sex marriage are completely valid and should be taken into consideration.
