Violence in the workplace July 21, 2006 was a day like any other. Elartrice “Marcell” Ingram showed up for work at 8:00 am as usual. His partner in the seafood department reported that all was well with no evidence of problems, but by the end of the day Elartrice had stabbed seven co-workers at Cordova Schnucks in Memphis, TN. He was found guilty by reason of insanity, and just over a year later his doctors testify that he is ready to be released under family supervision. His victims still fear that not enough time has passed and that he might snap again. Is this considered workplace violence? In 2007 in Charlotte, North Carolina, an employee who admitted to his family that he had been harassed by his co-workers became angered when he was fired and returned to work and killed two of his co-workers. Do we consider this violence in the workplace? Every day, in any job, imagine sitting at your desk and hearing two colleagues arguing. When they notice others watching, they retreat and return to their work without any resolution to the situation. Does this situation appear to be workplace violence? There are things we think we know about workplace violence but they are just myths. Dennis Davis, president of the Help Center in Vista, California, spoke about some of the myths at an SHRM conference and exhibit in Las Vegas in June 2007.
