Topic > Compare The Crucible and Doctor Faustus - 1050

These literary passages can be linked to the sin of greed. The more greedy the characters became, the more their worlds were torn apart. Although in “The Crucible” no one is actually shown to be working with the devil, Dr. Faustus did work directly with him. However, evil played a heavy role in the actions of the characters in both stories and managed to overwhelm many souls through their greed. Doctor Faustus was a very intelligent man, as was Abigail Williams, but they both failed to see how wrong their actions were. They used their knowledge to get what they wanted, even if it meant crossing moral boundaries. They were so caught up in their own satisfaction that they couldn't see what effects their actions had on others. The destruction occurred quickly, and they realized that their choices would not produce the results they had hoped for. Although both were given the opportunity to repent, neither did. Abigail denied any wrongdoing in court, and Faustus resealed his confirmation with the devil. All satisfaction vanished when they realized that they had lost themselves and that greed had driven away the goodness of their souls. In the end they both paid the ultimate price. Abigail's actions had spiraled out of control and led to her love being hanged, and Faustus had been condemned to a life in hell with no chance of living.
