Shiver by Karen Robards is the book I chose for this quarter's SSR. I chose the book because, at first glance, the cover was interesting. So, judging a book by its cover, I picked it up. Reading the short summary on the inside cover I decided I wanted to read it. There wasn't much to say, really. I had never read anything by this author before, so I had no idea what to expect. The book was about Samantha Jones and her son Tyler and how they were dragged into the most dangerous situation of their lives. Danny, or "Marco" to Sam, was the one who got them involved. He is a member of the FBI, going "undercover" as a former member of the FBI, one who was in the witness protection program and had robbed and betrayed those he worked with. Meanwhile, as Danny tried to protect Sam and Tyler from being taken away from the FBI's protection, they were being hunted by a dangerous group of criminals. These are the most important things that cannot change. Another thing that needs to change is Tyler's age, four. It proved difficult to find an actor young enough to play his part, so changing his age to six or seven would have been sufficient. Even though Tyler's original age was a great window of opportunity, it had to be done. One part that would be fit to be eliminated is Sam looking all over the house I'm stationed in looking for ways out in case of an emergency. Another thing might be when Sam argues with "Marco" about how Tyler shouldn't play violent video games when he catches them playing Halo on an Xbox. Something else would be the scene where the doctor explains to Danny what medicine to take and when for his leg. By the way, the scene where Danny gets shot by Veith at the beginning... middle of the paper... is a more modern neighborhood type for the part of the book that takes place in a row house. But the general area I would start with is the East St. Louis area. Once you got past all the ramblings I made in the previous paragraphs, I honestly really enjoyed the book. While it wasn't like most other books I've read (which means I didn't cry during the reading process), the characters were just as thought-provoking and interesting as characters in other stories, it was a little edgy and made me made me want to scream, to scream at Sam when he wouldn't let Tyler play video games with Danny, or at Danny when he called to take Sam and Tyler to a separate facility. Overall, this book opened me up to something that just isn't a romance novel. This story really shows that there are people with a lot of difficulties in their lives, and that's what I liked the most.
