Topic > Applying Albert Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory

Annie, a fifth grader in Mr. Keller's class, is quiet and grumpy for the fifth day in a row. "I just can't write," he finally says in an appeal to Mr. Keller. "I'm not a good student. Give me PE or art about this stuff any day!" If we apply Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory in his comment "I just can't write this stuff," how does Bandura's theory help us understand Annie? Second, Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory, which combines both behavioral and cognitive philosophy to form his theory of modeling, or observational learning, states that human personality is an interaction between the environment and a person's psychological processes. With this interaction humans are able to control their behavior through a process known as self-regulation (Woolfolk, 2013, p. 400). It also ensures that some factors such as environment and personal experiences can encourage behaviors like Annie, why? Because, in her case, it seems that Annie's academic achievement and personal interest in writing do not interact; Furthermore, Annie may have a lack of motivation and reinforcement in her life which may be the cause of her frustration in writing. As a result, she prefers school subjects such as physical education or art which, in her opinion, will make her successful. Woolfolk (2013) states that humans “can acquire a new skill or behavior through observation, but we may not perform that behavior until there is a motivation or incentive to do so” (p. 402). Therefore, lack of motivation, feedback, modeling, and commitment may be some of the reasons why Annie seems to discourage her writing skills. However, what might be the sources of Annie's low self-efficacy beliefs related to her writing beliefs? Bandura “suggests ...... middle of paper ......eat in Annie the self-discipline she needs, how? I will work closely with her on the academic side, but I need her parents and family to work with her in their home environment as well. I will include realistic feedback on his overall work and talk about his writing or any other issues. Because feedback is an externally imposed control that works with a person's self-regulatory ability to adapt behavior (p. 412). Furthermore, in Annie's case, I will investigate her family relationships, her friends, her values and her emotional problems. Because she may lack role models in her family, her social environment and interaction with others may be the factors in Annie's lack of concentration, motivation, and self-regulation.
