According to the Humane Society of the United States, more than 6-8 million animals are placed in shelters each year. Of these 6-8 million, 3-4 million of these animals are euthanized due to animal overpopulation. Euthanasia of animals in shelters must stop. Shelters exist to help people find their lost pets or give lost pets a new loving home, not to kill healthy animals that still have life left. Some ways to help end this situation are to make it a law to spay or neuter animals, to tax citizens to help fund shelters, or to not have cage shelters funded by fundraisers. Animals euthanized in shelters due to overpopulation are not always sickly or aggressive. Millions of healthy animals are killed for no reason other than there isn't enough room for them or they can't afford to care for them. Over the past 40 years America has reduced the percentage of animals euthanized from 25% to 3%. With a little more effort, euthanasia of healthy animals could disappear in the next few years. Making the spaying or neutering of animals a law is a pretty simple solution. When a cat or dog comes into a vet's office to get vaccinated, as they all require, the vet can hold the animal and treat it themselves. However, all these procedures are paid, so owners must pay the costs of the operation to get their pets back. However, if all the dogs and cats were fixed, that would end all the dogs and cats. So, to keep animals regulated but not extinct, only certified breeders may have animals that are not spayed or neutered. This would work to some extent, but people would try to get around the problem and simply not take pets to vets, leading to sicker pets. And... middle of paper... from mills but they have to adopt from shelters because every adoption saves a life from death.
