In a day we make a wide range of decisions, some seem small and some seem big but they all affect our destiny. There are many difficult choices we must make in our lives. Which university to attend? Who to marry? How we want to exist. When we make our decision we consider ourselves and the people we love and try to do the right thing, however we are human and therefore sometimes we make the wrong choice. Sometimes we are pressured by irrational emotions, by society, or by the glimmer of gratitude and wealth. Sometimes we make a choice that seems right but has disastrous results. Every character in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet at some point takes the wrong path and leads us to the tragic end. This reflects on one of the main themes of Romeo and Juliet; that despite our best intentions we don't always know better. Romeo killed Tybalt to avenge the death of his friend Mercutio and to defend his family's honor but failed to consider the chain reaction of anguish that this hasty decision would cause. After his cold sword takes Tybalt's last breath, he exclaims "O, I am Fortune's fool." Indicating that Romeo believed that Tybalt's death was written in the stars and that he was just following destiny, so the murder was justifiable in that sense. Mercutio was Romeo's best friend so his anger towards Tybalt is more than understandable but killing someone always makes things more difficult. The prince banishes Romeo to Mantua, far from the loving walls of Verona and this upsets the lives of almost all the characters in the play. The repercussions of this decision reach until the last scene of the play when we learn that Lady Montague, Romeo's mother, has died, Romeo's father explains that “The pain of my son's exile has stopped her breathing (5.3 .219) ...... middle of paper ...... At first he resists Romeo's request for a bottle with the customs loosen until finally he says: «My poverty, but not my will allows (5.1.79)». Although the pharmacist knows that what he is doing is wrong and will lead to the death of others, he is only doing it for the glimmer of money, so he is just as blind as the other characters. The main message of Romeo and Juliet is that we can be well-intentioned, but people and making mistakes is what we do best. You can take this message cynically or positively. You can look at it from the point of view that we are all blind and groping towards death, or you could look at it from the point of view that the future is unpredictable, so we might as well live life fully now. Shakespeare understood this and although Romeo and Juliet died young but they died in love
