Most people tend to think that unhelpful thoughts arise as a result of challenging situations. The different types of unhelpful thinking styles are mental filters, jumping to conclusions, personalization, catastrophic thinking, black and white thinking and so on. What resonates most with me is the mental filter. This occurs when people focus on the negative aspects of a situation more than the whole story.
