Topic > Super Bowl Commercial Analysis: Oprah's Whole Again...

This is a 2013 Jeep Super Bowl commercial with Oprah Winfrey as the narrator. We are in times of undeclared war and we miss our troops and we want them back and Oprah is basically telling them that they are not forgotten. It shows the families of the soldiers who are home and missing someone and shows the void that the soldiers have left since their departure. It's a battle that families fight because they miss their soldier while they are out fighting the other half of the battle. When troops return to their families, they fill that void again and our nation is reunited. The best of our nation is abroad and the best of our nation is Jeep. Oprah Winfrey tells the story of families waiting for the day they become "Whole Again." She is used Once again the phrase used by Oprah "you have been missed, you have been needed, you have been cried for, you have been prayed for" shows the emotional side of things. When the line is said the emotions run deep because the images show how difficult it is without the other person present. There is a scene where the mother lies in bed with her children because their father is missing at that moment. When Oprah says "you were needed" there is a clip of a daughter dressed as her father. This struck me because it should be the mother's job to dress her daughter, but somewhere she is brave for our country. How often do we see women in the military compared to men? It seems to be much more difficult when the mother is missing as she is not there to care for as has been seen in other women. I think the author does a great job of matching the scenes to the words spoken and conveys how necessary the troops are in their families. It continues with "there will be a place left open, a light left on" that light that is left on is a symbol of hope for their soldier's return and their well-being. The commercial continues but remains dark until the soldier returns home, the sun shines brighter and there is no shadow. The sun symbolizes a sense of relief at being well again. It also promotes peace within oneself knowing that one is home and reunited with one's family. As the Jeep drives away, the sun shines on it to show that the Jeep is the best we are made of as Americans and Jeeps are
