Unable to provide for themselves and constantly judged by everyone, women face many everyday problems in Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice follows the heroine Elizabeth and her romance with Mr. Darcy in a world where gender really matters. Without husbands women cannot survive; therefore, it is very important for women to get married. They are also expected to behave in a specific way and when they don't they are looked down upon. Overall, gender is very one-sided and because of this it causes a lot of problems for women. In the 19th century, marriage occurred primarily for financial reasons. Love is the last thing you think about before getting married. This was because women depended on their husbands to provide for them since they could not go out and get a job. A great example of this is through Charlotte and when the narrator states, “Marriage has always been her object; it was the only solution for well-educated young women of small fortune.” (Austen 149). Charlotte is not rich by nature, so she needs a husband. Furthermore, this shows how one-sided gender is and how it leans more towards the benefits of men. If Charlotte were a man she wouldn't need to worry about getting married. The man she marries is, of course, a rich man who has no particular reason to marry other than the fact that it is a normal thing for him. The narrator emphasizes this by saying, “Mr. Collins, to tell the truth, was neither sensible nor pleasant; his company was annoying and his attachment to her must have been imaginary. But he would still be her husband. (149). Unlike women, men had no real purpose in getting married. This made married women almost lucky. The only way a woman could get married is if... middle of paper... it's more of a problem for lower class people rather than women, but that's not the case. If a lower-class man disagreed with an upper-class woman, his word would still trump hers. Here too the reputation is threatened and this is because the ruin of the reputation can mean the end of a woman's life. No man would want to marry such a disrespectful and spiteful woman who in turn lets her use the last money her family is willing to give. In conclusion, the women in Pride and Prejudice are held back behind the ideal perception of women created by men. Keep women under control by preventing any dependency, forcing marriage on them and avoiding those who disobey. Constantly giving more power to men and taking away any freedom women might have. It's truly amazing that Elizabeth Bennet ultimately found love despite everything that was against her.
