They would use group assignments sparingly and instead come up with a lesson or activity that would incorporate most, if not all, of the class at the same time. I find these are usually more beneficial for me, because it eliminates any awkwardness a group assignment might have and opens up the room for a broader discussion so you can hear about ideas you might not otherwise have heard. I generally find that using small group assignments too often is bad for me because it usually takes up too much time, which leads to rushing the rest of the lesson
