The story of "Unwind" revolves around three main characters who are all programmed to be sent to a harvest camp and unfold. Connor is a sixteen-year-old whose family believes he has caused too much trouble for society. Risa is a ward of the state and, due to budget cuts, is too expensive to keep in the program. Lev is the tithe and the individual who is born with the purpose of being fulfilled. Connor one day discovers a relaxation order in the house and decides to escape. With the help of an honest truck driver, Connor manages to escape. However, Connor keeps his cell phone and the tracker inside gets him captured. The police attempt to arrest Connor but he resists arrest, runs into traffic on the street and grabs a tithe to use as a human shield. This event in turn causes a bus full of state wards to go out of control and overturn. Risa is one of the people on that bus. Risa, Connor, and Lev all run into the woods. The next morning, while the three are gathering supplies such as food and clothing, they come across a baby stork on the door step. Due to past experiences, Connor decides to put all three of them in danger and decides to go get the child as a police car slowly passes by. Risa, Connor, Lev and the baby all get on the school bus in hopes of not being suspected by the police car. Once they arrive at school, they find the nearest bathroom and hide there with the child. Lev sees this as an opportunity to escape. As a tithe, he believes it is an honor to live with the purpose of being liberated, so he finds his way to the school office and delivers himself, Connor, and Risa. He then asks to be called and calls his shepherd, who to Lev's surprise informs him that his face has been purposely k...... middle of paper...... exploding inside the unwinder. Lev wants to do the same, but changes his mind, saves Connor and confesses to the police. Connor wakes up in the hospital and is informed that he was the reluctant recipient of a new eye and hand that evidently belonged to Roland. The nurse also gives Connor a fake ID to save him from being rolled out. Risa remains paralyzed from the waist down because her band was ringing when the clappers exploded, but she refuses treatment because the cripples cannot be undone. Lev is also saved. The explosive liquid is removed from his bloodstream and his uncle seeks guardianship. Risa and Connor take over as the admiral because the admiral is too weak after his heart attack. Because the Admiral did not want an untethered heart, his heart only functions at 25% of its full potential. However, he is still alive and well.
