Topic > Sculpture of a man and wife in traditional clothing

The American government should fight drug addiction, not drug cartels, to win the war on illegal drugs. According to the description of the Oriental Institute Museum, this sculpture was made during the 5th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, reigns of Menkauhor and Unis (ca. 2466-2400 BC). This sculpture was found and rescued by the Egypt Exploration Fund, now known as the Egypt Exploration Society, in the Nenkhefetka Tomb, Deshasha, Egypt. The sculptor's name appears to be unknown; however, the name of the sculpture, given by its discoverers, is Man and Wife in Traditional Clothing. Egyptian sculptures of this type do not have any particular characteristics that differentiate them from each other. The sculpture Man and Wife in Traditional Clothing possesses many, if not all, of the contemporary characteristics of ancient Egyptian art. First of all, this sculpture is inactive, with no intention of movement and with a very rigid posture. The position of the characters is essentially the one used in the past: figures very close to each other, hands close to the body, feet flat on the ground and heads looking towards the horizon. Secondly, the sculpture has realistic parameters, but has some idealized features such as enlarged heads and eyes, characteristic of the period. Third, I would say that this sculpture comes close to naturalistic standards. The sculpture illustrates a certain presence of muscles in the male body and a clear representation of the difference in skin tone between the sexes. However, it presents some stylized details, such as the elaborate wigs and the fall of the clothes on the bodies, which would affirm the opposite. Although this artwork is a sculpture, it reveals its entire contents in a two-dimensional perspective. Any angle...... middle of paper ......sculpture does not represent someone or something, we could conclude that the sculptor preferred to create straightforward works. This may seem somewhat contradictory to the sculpture itself due to its static and centered position, but since this piece comes from the earliest examples of Ancient Egyptian art, we might somehow break the standards and come to this conclusion. Finally, what caught my attention about this sculpture was the humanism involved which reminds me that we, as humans, have had the same ideas and values since the beginning of our race on Earth. This sculpture represented, represents and will represent the reason why humans take time to make art: because we want to capture all our essence and passion in one image. For some people the man and wife in traditional clothing may seem like ancient Egyptian art, but to me it is a reflection of ourselves in the past.
