The story of “The Wife's Lament” is a mystery. There are many interpretations about who the wife was and what she was going through. Two of the possibilities are that she was killed by her husband and haunted the earth in her afterlife and that after her husband's death she went mad. A justifiable theory is that her husband, the lord, was unhappy and killed her. It looks like it could have killed her in some sections. In the poem she laments that he was sorrowful and unfortunate (“Wife” 1). For this reason it is plausible that he decided to unload his misfortune on his wife by killing her. It's unclear why he would choose to kill her, regardless of the fact that she speaks like a betrayed one. He openly states that he was involved and thinking about murder ("Wife" 1). While he might have been preparing to kill someone else, there is no one else mentioned in the poem to give evidence of this. She is still reeling from the shock of his betrayal, surprised that he would do it. For these reasons, the wife may have killed her husband. Furthermore, the wife is as restless as someone stuck on earth as the living dead would be. She says he sent her somewhere, to an unhappy place (“Wife” 1). One place that could have sent her is the afterlife where she now restlessly dwells. The wife may feel alone there and wonder what happened to her husband and how he got such terrible luck. She has been exiled and is now alone and friendless (“Wife” 1). The “exile” could simply be an early death that feels like exile to her since none of her friends would be dead yet either. Now she cries because they are all on earth and she is separated from them. One point is obvious; she is bitter about her situation. The valley... in the center of the card...g for her beloved husband (“Wife” 2). It's probably upsetting to be the only one who still has hope for his return. For this reason she must have pushed them away even though they were tired of taking care of her. His wife loved him very much; as a result, she is devastated that they are no longer together, so much so that it drives her crazy. As has been said, there are many theories about the backstory of “The Wife's Complaint,” two of which have been presented here. The wife may have been killed by her husband and, unable to die, haunted the land where all her friends still lived. Otherwise the husband might have been shipwrecked and the wife would have gone mad with grief, longing to have him back. There is no way to know who the woman really was and what happened with her husband, but people will always be able to speculate and choose to believe whatever theory they prefer..
