Topic > The Fallacy of the American Dream - 833

“The essence of the American Dream is the understanding that we are here on this earth and in this land for a higher purpose... Whatever gets in the way of the dream, we must fight. Anything that strengthens the dream, we must support." Steve Forbes couldn't have said it better. The American dream continues to thrive and flourish since our founding fathers sat together in a room and created a document for every man to follow. For years the idea of the American Dream has been solid, however, as America has aged, so has the idea of the American Dream. America and its citizens have begun to awaken from their long sleep and realize that the dream does not erase the realism of their waking life. For this reason, foreigners have been reluctant to believe in the United States; but we must understand that it is not the American dream but many other factors such as wealth, influence, jealousy and imperialism. However, one should not forget the debate over the US presence in Iraq, its activities as an “imperial bully” and its cultural dominance in the United States. Foreigners do not understand the actions America took to directly go to war in Iraq. America is a world power and for Saddam Hussein to have the audacity to attack us in this way is highly disrespectful. The incident on September 9, 2011 was such a tragedy that it affected not only America but the entire world. The Bush administration had no choice but to seize this opportunity and attack; the world was not opposed to the idea of invading Iraq. Bush and his colleagues were heroes; in the eyes of foreigners, America was doing the right thing by protecting the American nation and defending its honor. However, as the years passed and the misunderstood dream and purpose of our presence in Iraq seemed to wean foreigners began to believe that “…large majorities believed that the war on terrorism was aimed at establishing United States world dominance” (Abramasky 103 ). We are not in Iraq nor to impose our power; not to impose an idea of world domination, but to contain the threat and keep, or rather prevent, something like the 9/11 incident from happening again. However, one can understand why foreigners question America's affairs in another country. When one country questions the actions of another country, it is only one of two things: the first is that the country is in trepidation about the other country's loyalty or the other country craves the other country's power..
