The entire story revolves around this struggle and is full of racism. When Arnetta approached the other girls in the group about what white girls called Daphne, the group accepted what Arnetta said. Arnetta made the issue bigger than it needed to be by saying, “'We can't let him get away with it,' lowering his voice to a laryngeal whisper, 'We can't let him get away with calling us niggers. I say let's teach them a lesson'” (Packer 7). This quote really shows how racism can get out of control when you feel like your race has grown up in a negative way. These young girls show racism that you wouldn't expect, so it's a good explanation for why race can come at all different ages. When girls plan how to jump white girls, the way they come up with the idea makes it difficult to fully understand that this is coming from a group of girls who are around ten years old. Ultimately, when the girls realize that the white girls did not intentionally mean the racial slur and also that perhaps they thought Arnetta was making the whole thing up, they realized that racial discrimination can go both ways. This is shown when Arnetta tells the leader of Troop 909 and points to the girl who said it, but the leader tells her that she couldn't have said it because she doesn't speak.
