Ring Around the RosieBubonic plague is a zoonotic disease, carried and transferred by fleas to small rodents. Without treatment, the disease kills 2/3 of infected humans within the first four days of infection. The vilest symptom that first appears on an infected person is an infection of the lymph glands after being bitten by a flea carrying the virus. These, when infected with the plague, are called buboes and are most often found on the armpits, groin and neck area of the victim. Other symptoms of the plague are chills, high fever, muscle cramps, convulsions, vomiting and anything else your worst enemy would wish upon you. All symptoms, however, are caused by decay of the skin. The Black Death is so deadly that your body begins to decompose and shut down before you even die. Bubonic plague is caused by an infection of the lymphatic system. It is very rare for the disease to spread from human to human. When spread through human contact, it is a slightly different version of the virus. When the rat dies, the flea searches for a new host to infect. The bacterium lives inside the animal's digestive system until it too dies from the Black Death. The symptoms for rats were much the same as for humans. The plague means nothing but death to anyone. Treatment for bubonic plague was nonexistent until the 1900s, and patients were prescribed antibiotics. Currently, for the 1-6 cases that occur each year in America, patients are given streptomycin, gentamicin, and other aminoglycosides. These, if administered within the first 48 hours of the bite, have a 100% success rate. However, until we achieved what we do now, attempts to cure it included treating the buboes with vinegar, cutting the o...... middle of paper......king that bubonic, yes spreads much faster. The word “quarantine” comes from the Italian word quarantine meaning 40 days, the period of isolation that was practiced during the Black Death to the family of the deceased by bubonic plague. During the period in which the Black Death was seriously and rapidly exterminating almost everyone, none of the doctors or scientists suspected that fleas or mice could be to blame. There is no documented evidence that anyone has any idea what the cause might be other than that God sent punishment for everyone. Today, it primarily affects those in Africa due to high rat populations and poor sanitation practices.
