Topic > 1776: Mission Accomplished - 727

In David McCullough's historical book “1776” he outlines the entire year 1776 in a very eloquent and informative way. McCullough is a renowned author of many books relating to American history. Other popular titles, including “John Adams” and “Truman,” are examples of the commitment to accurately portray American history. Within his book “1776,” McCullough’s thesis and focus on what he is trying to argue in this book is best stated exactly by himself at the National Book Awards in 1985: “History shows us how to behave. History teaches, reinforces what we believe, what we stand for, and what we should be willing to stand up for. History is, or should be, the foundation of patriotism, not the hammy kind of patriotism but the real thing, love of country.” By analyzing the achievements and actions of individuals during the year 1776, McCullough wants us to learn what true patriotism is. The book outlines the entire year 1776 focusing on the war itself and its consequences. He does a fantastic job of citing his sources by referencing journals, manuscripts, books, and newspapers. Regarding George Washington's choice to lead the Continental Army, Washington expresses his concern over his inability to complete the task. Even before discovering that his army is made up of both old and very young inexperienced people. Early on, the Continental Army expresses false confidence in its power as it wins battles against relatively small British soldiers. That trust was quickly shattered when Britain chose to invest more soldiers in the war, quickly retaking lost lands and driving back the Continental Army, state by state. This wide range of sources... middle of paper... For example, McCullough pointed out the incompetence of Lee (a chief officer in Washington's Army) but in reality he had more experience than all the other officers and knew how to inspire fear in the English. Overall, I enjoyed this book and the way its historical information is presented. In fact, all books about history have some sort of opinion to add to the suspense and drama and this book does a great job of downplaying it. Furthermore, how the author managed to capture the reader's attention while focusing on his thesis and achieving its realization allowing the reader to truly understand what patriotism is. There aren't many books that inspire, but this one is unique in that way. Adding to our knowledge of what happened in 1776, McCullough does an excellent job accurately describing the challenges and growth that spawned our country..
