Chiefdoms that contain multiple lineages and have many jobs that were often filled by captured slaves. According to Diamond, religion also plays a role in this as it evolves to be more and more supportive of government as society becomes more complex. Chiefdoms had a redistributive economy in which the chief received all goods and then redistributed them among all the people. They become institutionalized and more formalized and are used to strengthen the power of the secular government in society. For example, in chapter 14, Diamond argues that complex societies are governed by "kleptocracies" that take resources from people and must keep them happy and unaware while robbing them (p.276). Kleptocracy is when the leader withholds far more tribute than he gives. A very interesting example is the need for government as societies grow. Since there are more people together, more disputes can arise because they are strangers thrown together. Since they don't know or care about each other, fights are less likely to be broken up. So a large society that leaves conflict resolution to its members is doomed to fail (p.286). This is why complex societies needed to form a government. This is related to the theme because it touches on issues of governance and creation
