In life we ask ourselves whether God is immanent or transcendent. Immanent theology believes that God is in everything on earth. Immanence is similar to omnipresence in that God is present in everything at the same time. As human beings we believe that God is always present, but we continue to consider Him superior. Transcendent theology believes that God is above the earth and that he is separate and independent from nature and humanity. God is not attached or involved in his creation. As humans living on earth we do not know who God is because God lives outside of space and time. There are various arguments and examples in support of immanent and transcendent theology through theologians that make one wonder whether God is immanent or transcendent. Thomas Berry and Rudolf Bultmann are two specific examples of immanent and transcendent theologians. Thomas Berry was a Catholic priest, theologian and ecological thinker. Thomas Berry's philosophy was immanent and earth-centered. The idea for Thomas Berry's New History came about after reflecting on the social, political and economic problems that humans faced in the community. It was then that Thomas Berry dedicated his career to discovering why and how Western religion and culture have failed to maintain a nurturing relationship between man and the Earth. Thomas Berry wanted people to be more involved in the universe and natural nature rather than have it speak for itself. Thomas Berry wanted to demonstrate that God was not only the Creator of superior beings, but that He surrounded human beings wherever they went. God is not far from creation and all creation participates in the divine reality. Specifically, he wanted to demonstrate that God is in nature and that humans should create a su...... middle of paper......s. The first mode is Jesus Christ. The story of God's acts is surrounded by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Transcendent believers believe that God's knowledge is not about human nature or experience, but that God gives his knowledge to Jesus Christ, whom they consider both God and human. The second mode is the Scriptures because it is a privilege to witness divine revelation. The last modality is the proclamation of the Gospel by the Church. Through these methods we understand what God works but they do not explain the miracles that happen on earth. Through transcendent theology we focus more on the divine God rather than questioning human understanding. Therefore, Karl Barth's theology recovered the transcendence of God. Through Thomas Berry and Karl Barth we understand the existence of God in immanent theology and transcendent theology.
