Topic > Analysis of the Rule of St. Benedict

St. Benedict states that abbots are responsible for the people entrusted to him, and says that they will have to account for those for whom he was responsible, as well as for himself. However, no one is responsible for the sins of another person. We all have free will and we cannot force anyone to do something they don't want to do, such as following God's will. It also says that people must tell the abbots about their sins and what they have done wrong. This was in the Old Testament and mentioned nothing about an abbot. This gives the abbot unauthorized power. We are only required to confess our sins to God, but we can confess them to others if we want. The Abbot is also the one who decides everything, and it is not allowed to question him. This is not true. God is the only one we should respond to and follow. Yes, people are there to guide us, but if they go against God's will, then we ignore them and follow God instead. St. Benedict places the abbot above God in some places, but Got is the creator. God has ultimate and final authority. There are many things that St. Benedict says that I disagree with. He uses unauthorized violence, contradicts himself and the Bible, and gives too much power to the abbot. Even if he means well, you cannot put your desires and wills above those of God. God is the one who has the final say, even if we disagree with him. God knows what is best, and if Saint Benedict understood it, he would do it
