Almost all men can endure adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power. As Abraham Lincoln said, the human soul has and can survive many excruciating and scarring things. It is also stated that finding the true intent of a person's heart means providing power to an individual. People have been able to overcome many difficult and “impossible” obstacles in this life. It is the human spirit that pushed and pushed to use those obstacles as ladders to a path to a better life. Throughout the known history of humans, phenomenal changes have occurred, most of them triggered by people. The human race is powered by nothing more than a population of independent humans. Each mortal is individually driven, torn and grown by that of none other than simply a spirit, the Human Spirit. It is what pushes forward and achieves what one hopes for. The theme of the human spirit is present in The Crisis by Thomas Paine which articulates thoughts and feelings of the fears of the people as they are about to go against Britain:I I have as little superstition in me as any living man, but my secret opinion is always It has been, and still is, that Almighty God will not consign a people to military destruction, nor leave them unsupported to perish, those who have sought so earnestly and so repeatedly to avert the calamities of war, by every decent method which wisdom could devise (Paine 161). This quote is a perfect example of the human spirit because it shows how people are spiritually stretched and strengthened during times of difficulty. It gives people hope built on the reasoning that their needs were not being met but simply ignored. Thomas Paine encourages people to take action on their own by focusing on all the bad things that have happened... the center of the card... it's more than just a theme in a book or play. It's a way of life, as emerges in The Crisis, The Crucible, as well as Before My Heart Stops and The Minister's Black Veil. The human spirit is how humans grow in this life. It is what drives you to want more and to get what you hope for both emotionally and spiritually. Works CitedCardall, Paul. Before my heart stops. Utah: Shadow Mountain, 2010.
