The painting by Peter Paul Rubens depicts a situation involving the survival of the fittest. In this Meleager battle, a human has difficulty defeating the sturdy Calydonian boar. It shows the contrast between the two resilient forces through the use of light and dark tones, alternating them throughout the painting. To represent the battle between good and evil, Rubens gave the boar's territory a dark and gloomy essence. Thus, in contrast to the malevolent animal, on the right where Meleager and Atlanta are located, the artist generates a bright glow in the background, indicating power. Rubens lightly irradiates the sky, as he paints the fight during dawn, when the sun rises gently to its peak, revealing the dawn. The clouds change from cloudy and ominous to a light cream color, indicating hope for the survival of Meleager and Atlanta. The new morning is a symbol of victory from Meleager's perspective, although he and Atlanta are both shown carrying bows, arrows, and spears to kill the boar. This shows that a powerful force to destroy the boar may not be enough. In addition to this, the boar places its hoof on the chest of a wounded man, establishing its dominance and warning others to keep away, otherwise they will suffer the same fate. Next, there is a repetition of elements in the painting, as the tree is illustrated twice and there are numerous dogs and horses. Rubens created a tree/shrub perspective towards the horizon to give the painting an overall earthy feel. Two men dressed in orange are shown blowing horns, perhaps intended to calm the boar. The women at the bottom left are not worried about the situation, even if they carry spears in their hands. “Atlanta and Meleager in search of the Cal...... in the center of the sheet...... when Meleager was growing up his uncles they always teased, since he was the son of the enemy (although he was also the son of their sister). They are the ones who convince Meleager to go on a journey to kill the boar, expressing the domestic tension that Meleager was dealing with. The painting does not reflect how Meleager's family is his enemy; rather, it suggests that an assembly is trying to fight the boar together. The focal point of this painting is obviously the boar, which shows its strength when it conquers another human being. This painting depicts the main event on which the entire story is based, as the killing of the boar has serious consequences for Meleager and ultimately leads to his death. Unity and variety are both shown in this artwork: people dressed in bright colors are united to kill the boar, but they have different methods to deal with the situation.
